研究実績の概要 |
Because of the pandemic, research activities that were completed in FY2020 are mainly paper development.
First, the paper titled "Financial development and banking sector stability," co-authored with Dr. Lertwachara of Chulalongkorn University and Dr. Boonchoo of Mahidol University was published in 国民経済雑誌. In this paper, we examine the effects of financial development on banking sector stability. We find that not all dimensions of financial development promote banking sector stability. Financial efficiency is more important to banking sector stability both in developed and developing countries. Second, the paper titled "Bank regulations, bank competition and bank risk-taking: evidence from Japan," co-authored with Prof. Vithessonthi of Sunway University was published in Journal of Multinational Financial Management. In this paper, we empirically test whether an effect of bank competition on bank risk-taking is moderated by a change in bank regulation. We find that bank competition is positively associated with ex ante bank risk-taking. The relaxation of the capital adequacy requirement in Japan around the global financial crisis of 2007-08 appears to have the differential effects on bank risk-taking across the domestically active banks and the internationally active banks in Japan. Third, in collaboration with Prof. Vithessonthi, I have developed a paper titled "Financial openness, financial markets development and economic growth" and a paper titled "Catching the dream: the path of financial development in emerging markets" for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

理由
Because the global pandemic has prevented overseas research trips, activities in the last phase of the research project (Phase 3: Implications for policies and firms’ strategies) in FY2020 were limited to online meetings with research collaborators and paper development. The current paper (i.e. Financial openness, financial markets development and economic growth) has been revised along the line of comments from International Review of Financial Analysis and prepared for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. A new working paper (i.e. Catching the dream: the path of financial development in emerging markets) has been developed and prepared for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I am on sabbatical and will conduct field research in Thailand in FY2021. Depending on the situation of COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand, a seminar, which is a key activity in the last phase of the project (Phase 3: Implications for policies and firms’ strategies), will be organized to gather opinions and comments from academic scholars, policy makers and the private sector.
I will also proceed the plan to broaden practical implications of research results by visiting and exchanging ideas with scholars at universities and research institutions in Thailand, for example, Business Excellence Unit of the College of Management Mahidol University, Center for ASEAN and Asia Studies of National Institute of Development Administration, Sasin Japan Center of Chulalongkorn University, Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology Thammasat University, Chiang Mai University, Assumption University, and Panyapiwat Institute of Management.
All key research activities for the Phase 3 are planned to be completed in FY2021 with two papers getting published in peer-reviewed journals, a seminar on "financial development model for the GMS countries" being organized in Thailand, and research network with universities in Thailand being strengthened for future collaboration.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The global pandemic has caused disruptions of research activities of this project, in which key activities need to be conducted overseas. More specifically, invitations of research collaborators from Malaysia and Thailand to visit Kobe University could not be done. Field research in the GMS countries could not be conducted. A seminar on "financial development model for the GMS countries" could not be organized as planned. The budget is therefore transferred to FY2021 and will be used for (i) conducting field research in Thailand (as the pandemic situation still causes difficulties in cross-border movement, field research has to be limited to Thailand where I will take a year’s sabbatical at the College of Management, Mahidol University), (ii) organizing a seminar on "financial development model for the GMS countries" with academic scholars, policy makers and the private sector, and (iii), if the pandemic situation gets better, attending and presenting a paper at a conference in the United States or Australia.
