Through the data gathered in the computer literacy classes taught by the principal investigator in the past academic year, various results were highlighted. They were presented in one journal paper, one conference paper and one poster presentation.
The benefits and drawbacks manifesting in multicultural classrooms were studied and analyzed. Based on data gathered in two multicultural environments, at two academic institutions from two different countries, the students’ perceptions of the cultural differences, multiculturality and diversity in the classroom, how they help build an academic identity and how they influence the teaching and learning process, were highlighted. The conclusions showed that, while they are acutely aware of cultural differences in the classroom, the students have no expectations from their instructors to adapt the teaching style based on the different cultural backgrounds of the class participants. Moreover, the need for a culturally adaptive teaching in natural sciences, not only in the traditional social sciences, became transparent.
Due to the current pandemic and lack of face-to-face classes, visits to other universities within Japan could not take place. However, since the majority of classes were held online, new paths opened in studying how the cultural differences manifest in online environments, in particular during what was named "emergency remote teaching" environments.
