I have made important progress on the early stages of this project. In particular, I have studied in greater detail the situation in which non-Markovian effects associated with the continuum threshold (waveguide cut-off mode, for example) can be enhanced so that they will drive the dynamics associated with spontaneous decay from an initially prepared state. In Ref. [1], I have demonstrated how a so-called Bound State in Continuum (BIC) can be used to modify the situation so that the non-Markovian dynamics are dramatically enhanced so that they replace the usual exponential decay, which is a rare situation in nature. (Note: a bound state in continuum is an unusual quantum state that is discrete and localized despite being embedded in the energy continuum that is usually associated with radiating modes). In particular, by choosing an initial state that lies orthogonal to the bound state in continuum, we can avoid both the resonance that is associated with exponential decay while also avoiding the stability associated with the bound state in continuum itself. In the future, I plan to show how this can affect the qualitative features of optical vortex production inside a waveguide.

I had planned to attend the PT-Symmetry and Physics with Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians conference that was held March 2019. However, unfortunately, there were some significant organizational issues with the conference and several people decided to change their plans and not attend the conference. I also decided not to go because some of the researchers with whom I wished to meet were not attending. (This includes my collaborator Gonzalo Ordonez from Butler University.) So this is why some funds were not used in the previous fiscal year. However, since I was not able to meet with Gonzalo Ordonez in March 2019 at the conference, this year I am planning to invite him to visit with our group in Osaka. So this is how the rolled-over funds will be used.
