研究実績の概要 |
The first research objective of our KAKENHI grant was to develop fluctuation theorems for replication of information. This part of the project is at a very good stage. We found a general expression for the fluctuation of error and speed in replication of information. Our main finding is that sign of correlations between speed and error can be positive or negative depending on the error correction network. This discovery will permit to understand information processing networks from measurements of correlations The results have been submitted to Physical Review Letters (Chiuchiu, Tu, and Pigolotti, under revision). We already received positive reviews and we expect the paper to be accepted soon. With an intern student (James Ferrere), we are studying but information processing where the chemical network is continuous and can be described by a reaction coordinate. We are finalizing the manuscript and we expect to submit it during the second year of the project.

理由
The project is progressing in a smooth way. The preparation of the first draft has taken slightly longer than expected, mostly because of the work necessary to make the manuscript adequate for a high-impact journal such as Physical Review Letters. Overall, we conclude the first year of the project with one paper at the revision stage in a high-impact journal and another paper in preparation. We believe that this level of progress is quite satisfactory.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the next year of the project we plan to: 1) Finalize the project on information processing via continuous incorporation of monomers. We already have a preliminary draft and we believe that we will be able to submit this manuscript within a few months. 2) Start a new project on how to estimate performance of information-processing networks implemented in replicating enzymes by looking at copy errors in sequencing data. This is a high-risk, potentially long-term project. If successful, it will provide important additional information about information-processing enzymes that can be incorporated in new models 3) Start the project on optimal information processing. This project will constitute the core part of the project. As a first step, we will restrict to a specific class of network architecture that generalize the Hopfield model of kinetic proofreading. We aim at estimating the optimal number of steps as a function of the energy budget. Beside its relevance for the general question of the proposal, this project could shed light on the functioning of many relevant biological systems such as ribosomes.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We slightly underspent the budget for the first year but we expect to spend it in the second year. The main expenses will be the purchase of a workstation for performing numerical simulations for the second part of the project and participation to conference to present our results.
