In the previous year, a number of new tiopronin-Au-mercapto cyclic aza (TPN-Au-MCA) monomer gold complexes were synthesized, characterized, analyzed and evaluated. The MCA compounds could be classified into types triazole, thiadiazole, and tetrazole derivatives. Each type of compound showed unique structural and electrochemical characteristics that influenced the auto-catalytic deposition reaction. Based on the results of the previous year, the probable mechanism responsible for the thiolate gold monomerization reaction was elucidated. This lead to further understanding of the electrochemical reactions involved that influence the auto-catalytic deposition reaction. Compounds that tautomerize between an iminothiol and thioamide were found to induce the gold thiolate monomerization reaction. Comprehension of the mechanism opened new doors to a broad range of compounds that poses the iminothiol/thioamide structure. Among the compounds that could now be strategically designed, new compounds that significantly improved the auto-catalytic electroless plating bath were identified and applied to fabrication of non-cytotoxic substrates for cell adhesion and growth into cell sheets followed by electrochemical detachment. Similarly, deposits from the improved electroless gold bath showed no signs of cyto-toxicity and were acceptable for application for tailored cell sheet fabrication.
