The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) obtained by using microwave irradiation was further used as catalysts for conversion of glucose to 5-HMF following the same experimental procedure carried out previously in AY2018~AY2019. Other than phosphorus (P) and boron(B), doping with iron (Fe) and copper (Cu), and addition of tungsten oxide (WO3) was also investigated. The catalytic activities were compared with other carbon-based catalysts such as graphite, nanodiamond, GO and rGO. rGO proved to be an efficient catalyst for the conversion of glucose among the tested carbocatalysts. Doping with P, B and Cu didn’t have any significant effect on the yield, but Fe-doped rGO showed positive effect on glucose conversion. The use of glucose as starting material was also compared with fructose. Most of the tested catalysts provided higher yield with fructose than with glucose as starting material. The mechanism of hydrolysis of sugars was also elucidated by molecular dynamic simulations, while the reaction parameters were calculated using MATLAB programming software. In addition, enzyme-immobilization on the surface of rGO, was further elucidated and its catalytic activity on the hydrolysis was also investigated.
