Energetics and energy level alignment have a profound effect on perovskite solar cell performance. During fabrication of perovskite solar cells (either by hybrid chemical vapor deposition or solution processing), perovskite films usually experience a variety of different atmospheres (e.g., ambient air, dry nitrogen gas, vacuum etc.). It is of vital importance to understand the influence of these different atmosphere conditions on the energetics of perovskite films. We performed a systematic study on this topic. In our study, we varied the atmosphere to simulate the various atmosphere conditions during device fabrication. We did experiments to measure the Fermi level evolution, surface photovoltage, photoluminescence properties, photovoltaic performance, and obtained the energy diagrams under various conditions. We find that the atmosphere has a strong effect on the energetics of perovskite films. In particular, we observed a universal Fermi level shift under vacuum for lead halide-based perovskites in this study.
