研究実績の概要 |
The researcher published foundational research on several Edo period books in the Art Institute of Chicago. To consider how Edo period editions of the "isshu kasen," one poem each from Thirty-Six Immortal Poets, follow or deviate from the compilation strategies of Fujiwara Kinto and Fujiwara Shunzei, one article discussed how the poem-choice of two illustrated commentaries differ and demonstrated the commentary author’s reception of Kinto and Shunzei’s original collections. A second article examined the differences between two illustrated versions by Suzuki Harunobu. Harunobu's second illustrated edition features a unique collection of poems and shows the artist's ability to respond to the Edo period populace’s hunger for new and innovative representations of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

理由
In response to the spread of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Japanese government closed borders to foreign residents reentering the country in early 2020. This policy applied to the researcher who is a foreign resident. Though the researcher was unable to attend international conferences, workshops, or perform in-person research outside Japan, the researcher redoubled her efforts in publishing foundational research on the books previously surveyed in the Art Institute of Chicago. The researcher attended conferences online and her research presented at international conferences has led to increased requests to participate in collaborative research.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
Though the Coronavirus Pandemic effects continue to be seen throughout the world, the researcher will intensify her publication of foundational research on the books surveyed in the Art Institute of Chicago. Moreover, the researcher will continue to attend virtual international conferences to ensure her research is shared with a wide audience. In the 2021 year, the researcher will consider texts that have never been studied before including kimono pattern books and other examples of the Edo period reception of classical Japanese literature.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In 2021 the researcher plans host a hybrid in-person and virtual international conference titled, “日本古典文学と古典籍の世界的な普及と和古書の研究の将来.” This workshop aims to establish the current state of the field regarding the study of premodern books in international collections and explore new topics. In addition, the researcher will collaborate with researchers in America to perform a remote survey of further titles in the Art Institute of Chicago collection. The final year’s funding will ensure a lasting legacy for the project regardless of the current difficulties presented by the Coronavirus Pandemic.
