My research plans for the past year were heavily disrupted due to the pandemic. This made travel and materials collection all but impossible in many circumstances but towards the end of the year I could secure more materials remotely. I did though manage to collect most of the relevant secondary literature and have seemingly discovered all remaining available primary sources. The edited volume is on schedule.
I was able to conduct several major research presentations at top universities and research institutes in Japan (Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient, Italian School of East Asian Studies, and Kyoto University; Modern Japanese History Workshop (Online), Tokyo University / Waseda University) and the UK (Centre for Japanese Studies Seminar, University of East Anglia). I also organised one dedicated mini conference entitled 'The Lion & The Sun: New Perspectives on Anglo-Japanese Military Relations' at the University of East Anglia, UK. These events proved to be great networking opportunities, providing me with many new contacts both in Japan and overseas and they also gave me several new leads on additional materials I hadn’t yet located. The events also provided good opportunities to speak directly with my collaborators on the edited volume and to think about the connections and links between our chapters and research topics. These presentations and the conference were also excellent platforms for the dissemination of my research results to date, to promote the project, and to recruit future potential collaborators.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
This year I plan to collect the remaining materials needed from the archives and museums in the UK and Japan, remotely wherever possible. I will complete my book chapter and secure a book deal for the edited volume dedicated to the project with a major scholarly publisher. I currently have four more conference panels scheduled, I will use these as spaces to network from and to build up further contacts and potential future collaborators in the field. I will also seek to secure a further book deal for a monograph on the British garrison of Yokohama with a major scholarly publisher.
