研究実績の概要 |
In 2019, I solved the problems encountered in the previous year. Besides, during the process, I found a surprising result that when there is a risk of market segmentation, firms’ entry via online stores may harm both consumer surplus and social welfare. This finding is important for my third year’s project in exploring how the presence of online stores affects consumers’ incentives to search. I, therefore, summarized my findings in a paper and submitted it to the Southern Economic Journal. The submission was highly evaluated by both the referees and the co-editor. I was invited to revise the paper for future publication. This paper can be expected to get published in 2020. Moreover, as planned, some related projects were accepted and presented in top peer-reviewed conferences, such as the 46th Annual Conference of European Association for Research in Industrial Economics and the XXXV Jornadas de Economia Industrial. I also visited Professor Michael Kopel at University of Graz.

理由
In 2019, I successfully solved the problems encountered in the previous year, such as simplifying my model to get closed-form solutions and checking the stability and uniqueness of the equilibrium. During the process, I came up with some new ideas, such as how consumers’ heterogeneity in willingness to pay affects firms’ entry via online stores and how firms’ entry decisions are affected by market segmentation. I modeled these ideas and found a surprising result that when there is a risk of market segmentation, firms’ entry via online stores may be harmful to both consumer surplus and social welfare. I thought this finding was very important for my third year’s project in exploring how the presence of online stores affects consumers’ willingness to pay and their incentives to search. I, therefore, summarized my findings in a paper and submitted it to the Southern Economic Journal. The submission was highly evaluated by both referees and the journal co-editor, so I was invited to revise the paper for future publication. Now, the revising work was finished, and this paper can be expected to get published in 2020. Besides, another paper (jointly completed in 2018 with Dr. Dongjoon Lee and Dr. Kansik Choi) was also invited by another journal, the Journal of Economics, with revision for future publication.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In 2020, I will first justify my theoretical findings in the previous year by real-world cases. I will mainly focus on the marketing literature on how consumers update their beliefs regarding experienced goods. If I can find some real-world evidence that support my theoretical mechanism, I can then finish it and move to my last project on how firms use their online stores as informative advertisements. If it turns out that my theoretical findings are too restrictive to be justified, I will further simplify the market assumptions and try to use the concept of general equilibrium rather than partial equilibrium to refine my results. Besides, I will submit my single-author paper on whether the presence of firms’ online stores increases the likelihood of the brick-and-mortar stores’ foreclosure to some high-tier journals such as Journal of European Economic Association. Besides, one of my working paper has been accepted for presentation by European Economic Association (because of the covid-19 pandemic situation, the conference this year will be held online). I also plan to finish the joint work with Professor Kopel Michael from the University of Graz. This paper is almost finished in 2019. We plan to first publish it as a discussion paper, and then submit to management journals such as Production and Operations Management or Management Science.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In 2019, I planed to purchase a notebook PC for running numerical simulations and related comparative statics. But it turned out that the most ideal model will be released and available in 2020. So I decided to postpone my purchase to 2020.

備考 |
Two of my projects are jointly carried out with Dr. Michael Kopel (University of Graz) and Kangsik Choi (Pusan National University).
