After 2 published papers in previous year, I prepared 2 other papers for publications at international refereed journals. The main point of them is to analyze the dynamic development period (2000s) in Vietnam regard to (1) responses of firms on politicians’ regional favoritism, and (2) gender equality.
In (1), from an unbalanced panel of 539 Vietnamese districts from 2000 to 2011 and considering all political terms since 1986, the paper examines firm behaviour in response to the favoritism of top ranked politicians towards their districts of birth. Results show that the number of firms, aggregated employment, and capital intensity in the private sector tend to increase in the home districts of politicians after they assume office. This favoritism is particularly pronounced in rural area. However, state-owned firms are indifferent. The paper discusses the non-response of state-owned firms and the continued development of the private sector even after political terms have ended.
In (2), the paper examines whether Vietnamese migrant workers induce different gender roles in housework division among the household members left behind. Using two waves of the Vietnamese Household Living Standard Survey (2006-2008), the paper apply the first-difference method and estimate a simple household fixed effects model with instrumental variables for robustness checking. Results show that temporary female migrants are associated with a higher probability of undertaking housework by male members left behind and there is a reduction in the gender gap in terms of time spent on chores.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I am going to improve the mentioned papers and continue sending the papers to international academic referred journals until they are accepted for publications. Meanwhile, I would like to revise the on-going paper on weather and human capital after presenting the paper at international conferences, and finally send it out for publication.
Besides, I intend to further analyze the dynamic development 2000s in Vietnam with regard to industrial zone (IZ) development. While IZ is not presence in everywhere, it receives intense investment and human capital, which is a kind of favoritism (place-based polices). I would like to examine whether such place benefits local business or not. Also, I would like to investigate the “impact” of IZ on local households’ employment, income, living expenditure, health, educational investment and wealth, which may cause inequality in the long run.
