Throughout the year I attended several conferences on issues related to gender violence allowing me to present my findings, network with other academics, and carry out some further fieldwork through interviews with government officials, NGO members, and activists: 12th June (2023), presentation on Fragile Safety: Gender-based Threats to Women’s Mental and Physical Health in Japan, at the 4th Global Congress on Gender and Sexuality Studies in Budapest, Hungary; 28th July (2023), presentation on Gender-based Harassment in Japanese Institutions: A Soft Policy Response Aimed at Normative Change, at 5th Global Conference on Women’s Studies, in Dublin, Ireland; 9th September (2023) a workshop on Gender-related Policy-making in Japan from an Educational Perspective, at the Hestia 2023 Symposium at Ryukoku University in Kyoto; 9 March (2024), with Professor Patrick Strefford, a workshop on Educational Mobility (and EMI) as a tool for political gender empowerment in ASEAN, at the 5th Annual Hestia Conference in Bangkok, Thailand. In January 2024 I published a peer-reviewed article: Gavan Patrick Gray (2024). The Politicisation of Sexual Violence in Ukraine: The Impact of Partisan Representation on Effective Responses. The Hestia Review, Vol. 2. pp. 23-35. ISSN 2758-7851. I also interviewed several NGOs who look at the issue of homeless children (in both Japan and Thailand) and I am currently working on a further paper or book chapter that will compare the response policies of the governments in both countries.
