研究実績の概要 |
This year saw mainly advancements in the development of the questionnaire to be used to judge student cultural competency before and after exposure to other cultures. The pilot survey was dispensed and then the data was analyzed to determine the validity of the items used on the instrument. These results were then published in a journal, resulting in one publication from the data. The instrument has since been adjusted to account for the results of the validity test, and to include items focusing on participant cultural competency skills. Contact has been made with individuals concerning the inclusion of participants in the annual ALT conference, but nothing has been decided on that ground. However, the course “Multiculturalism in Education” has been developed and one term of students have taken the course as a type of pilot to develop the lessons and activities which will hopefully improve the actual study’s participants’ cultural competency. Student feedback from this first course has been collected and will be considered for the coming term, in which the main data will be collected. As the focus of the research has shifted slightly toward improving participant cultural competency skills and the possible effects of interpersonal stressors, the researcher has read articles and attended conference presentations based on these topics.

理由
There are two main reasons for the slight delay. The first reason is that the time needed to validate the questionnaire used took longer than anticipated. However, as a result, an extra publication was developed. The second reason is that the targeted discussion with the Hiroshima Board of Education about including pre-service teachers into the ALT conferences has proven to be difficult. The researcher is still working on getting this opportunity set up.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Discussions will continue for trying to get permission to bring participants to this year’s ALT conference. The validated instrument will be adjusted slightly and given to participants before and after they attend this conference. Further, other participants who will join in the “Multiculturalism in Education” course will also be given the validated instrument as a pre- and post- assessment of participant cultural competency skills. The results will be presented in at least one conference next year (currently applying for the Korean TESOL conference), and the analysis of the data will be written up for publication.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The amount that was left over was a result of the lack of progress on making a decision for participant inclusion in the ALT conference. The amount was originally designed to be used as a type of conference and transportation fee for participants in the study to be able to attend this conference. As the decision has not been determined, I was unable to use this amount. Further, the pilot of the questionnaire did not require a fee for the printing and gathering of participants, so planned expenses were again not required.
