研究実績の概要 |
This study employs visual research methods and examines how various actors in higher educational institutions in Japan and Canada articulate the concepts of global citizenship and multiculturalism, and how their actions have relevance to the enhancement of diversity. During 2019, the final year of the study, the progress of the research project was favorable. This is due to the sufficient amount of data collected both in Japan and Canada in the previous year. In 2018, I carried out document analysis on the concepts of global citizenship and multiculturalism in Japan and Canada respectively. I also explored various visual research methods and launched a film project in order to articulate the notion of diversity. From June 2018 to February 2019, I collaborated with university students in Kumamoto and made a short film together. In March 2019, I screened the produced film and conducted interviews and surveys in Vancouver, Canada. In 2019, I finished analyzing the data collected in both countries. In June 2019, I presented the research findings including the produced film at the annual conference of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education in Vancouver. The film was highly appraised as a novel research attempt by the audience. Finally, in winter 2019, the research outcomes were published as articles. The results from this study show that filmmaking in the classroom has the potential as a new multicultural pedagogical approach that can accommodate and promote diversity among teachers and students.
