The purpose of this study is to develop an effective framework to guide teachers to improve planning, developing and teaching design education to develop critical thinking and creativity in children. Through this study I have identified a major issue on evaluating critical thinking during design activities for junior and high school students. I have clarified that teachers use various strategies to guide students in their reasoning processes. These strategies are useful interventions to help students improve their reasoning processes. But these strategies are not sufficient to evaluate students’ quality of reasoning, because there are no clear evaluation standards for determining good reasoning skills from poor reasoning skills. This has led me to establish a methodology to evaluate students’ quality of reasoning objectively and accurately. On the other hand, design as a form of general education has been widely implemented abroad. Drawing the essence of design education as a form of general education, I was able to adapt and implement relevant design education in a Japanese high school to develop creative thinking for students. From this research funding, I was able to complete about 4 conference presentations; and published 2 peer reviewed proceedings and 1 peer reviewed journal paper. There are further 2 more peer reviewed journal papers that are currently accepted but yet to be published. Besides, I was also able to organize online international forums to allow overseas educators to share with local teachers on the development of creativity and critical thinking.
