Based on the minimum inhibitory value of amikacin and chloramphenicol to the E.cloacae SENG-6, a study was conducted to evaluate the EPS production under sub-inhibitory level antibiotics exposure.Soluble microbial products (SMP), lightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) were extracted and quantity of carbohydrates and proteins were measured. Among the three fractions, highest protein concentration was present in SMP whereas the highest carbohydrate concentration was present in the LB-EPS fraction. SDS-PAGE confirmed that the protein concentrations reduced with increased antibiotic concentration. By using western blot, it was confirmed that A-type HBGA concentration in the EPS was also reduced with increased antibiotic concentration. A review paper titled "Understanding human health risks caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and resistance genes (ARG) in water environments: Questions to be answered" is under review in "Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology".
