In this year I continued studying the ballistic phonon and heat transport. My goal was to demonstrate length and temperature ranges of ballistic thermal conduction in silicon. Following the successful approach developed in the first year, I measured the thermal conductivity of silicon nanowires of different shapes and at different temperatures. I found that at 4 K, heat conduction is about 30% ballistic in the length scale of 400 nm, but weakens as I increase the length scale. However, as temperature is increased heat conduction becomes more diffusive and even the shortest nanowires display clear signs of ballistic heat conduction only up to 200 K. These results show working ranges of ballistic heat transport and were published in Nanoscale [Anufriev et al, Nanoscale 11, 13407 (2019)).
