研究実績の概要 |
Measurements and analysis of acetonitrile, ethanol, and methanol have been largely completed. To systematically study the influence of the alcohol’s molecular structure and chain-length on the electronic structure, measurements on 1-propanol and 2-propanol have been conducted as well; the data is currently being analyzed. The electro-kinetic charging in these liquids was characterized in detail by measuring series of different concentrations of electrolytes in solution. Additionally, while initially proposed as a future goal, establishing an international collaboration with partners in Europe enabled studies on liquid ammonia, an extremely important hydrogen-bonded system in close analogue to liquid water. First results on alkali metal solved in ammonia are published.

理由
While initially proposed as a far goal, measurements of additional liquids, such as 1-propanol and 2-propanol, to further study inter-molecular bonding and structural effects have been completed successfully. Also, the ability to conduct experiments on liquid ammonia in collaboration with partners in Europe is a huge leap forward in the ability to study non-aqueous solutions and their different behavior in comparison to water.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The last remaining year is used mainly to analyze the data, wrap up the current state of the project, and formulate future research goals. For this, new analysis methods have been developed which relate the electronic structure of a liquid directly to electro-chemical properties such as the position of the chemical potential within the band gap. The method is applied in parallel to liquid water as a reference case for a comparison between aqueous and non-aqueous liquids. Some additional experiments may be conducted depending on the necessity to verify results. The experimental equipment is available and operational as before. The collaboration with the Fritz Haber Institute in Germany will continue to enable more challenging experiments beyond the capabilities of the lab setup.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
New opportunities for collaboration with research groups in Europe shifted the spending more towards international travel in the last fiscal year. This postponed some spending on upgrades of the lab apparatus, which will be do this fiscal year with the remaining funding. Smaller amounts will be invested in consumables, such as glass ware or tubing for experiments, which is replaced regularly.
