Virtual reality (VR) video provides users immersive 360-degree (views from every direction can be rendered and seen) viewing experience for users wearing a head-mounted display. i.e. as the user rotates his/her head, different fields-of-views (FoVs) of the VR video are presented for observation accordingly. VR video transmission in one fundamental research problem in many VR applications. However, packet losses during the video transmission are unavoidable because of channel fading and shadowing in wireless networks and network congestion and jitter in wired networks, and this causes the video quality deterioration. This project focuses on this research issue and aims to provide error resilient VR video streaming to maximize users’ received video quality. Some of our contributions are as follows: we have surveyed the related works on VR video streaming, solved the formulated source/channel coding problem to protect the channel packet losses, and joint considered the video processing at the application layer and physical layer to mathematically optimize the VR video transmission. We have also built the VR system and obtained the QoE model for the VR video streaming. The related research results have been published in IEEE journal and conference papers.
