研究実績の概要 |
Concerning the first two (out of three) research questions posed in the proposal, we clarified that the out-of-plane deformation in a kirigami structure is the result of a buckling phenomenon, known as bulging cracks. Through our simulations, we realised that, without incorporating buckling, the transition between first (in-plane deformation) and second (out-of-plane) regime could not be captured. The next year of the project will be devoted to answering the third research question: the role of the kirigami cuts in the yielding stage that leads to the final fracture.

理由
The work allowed to answer two of the three research questions and led to the publications of six papers, all in peer-reviewed very reputable international journals. The project is progressing rather smoothly, that we are moving to validate our modelling on real structures. With my collaborators (from the UK, Italy and the US), we are simulating the mechanical behaviour of kirigami in two applications: the first one is a kirigami made with silk-based polymers; the second is a kirigami on cylindrical inflatable tubes for soft robotics.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Next and final year of the project will focus on the post-yield mechanics and the propagation of the kirigami cracks. We will also concentrate on a full validation (comparison with experimental data) of the software.

I will use the next year's budget to go to conferences and to pay for open-access publication fees.
