This year, I focused on documenting the findings of the research in the form of books and papers. Specifically, I summarized the research outputs into 2 books and more than five academic papers. The studies show that the core of global manufacturing value-added has shifted away from traditional labor-intensive manufacturing into products that embody higher technology. Industrial promotion today, thus, calls for facilitations for industrial (manufacturing) upgrading, rather than a mere expansion of low-skill labor-intensive manufacturing activities. The results suggest that premature deindustrialization tends to emerge when countries are confined to low-skill manufacturing even when they can participate in GVCs.
