研究実績の概要 |
Fish specimen collection from the two target lakes was successfully done again in 2019. Foreign collaborators for the both lakes contributed a lot in the field and paper works. Drs Hori and Lake Biwa Museum also provided valuable specimens. Analysis of feeding morphologies using micro CT is progressing as scheduled at OIST. Scanning of the model cichlid (scale-eating Perissodus microlepis) and some Malawian herbivorous species has been done. 3D image analysis is now performed using conventional landmarking and a novel approach. Laterality studies are also well progressing, consisting of neuron study using P. microlepis and aquarium experiments examining "golden ages" of laterality. Academic papers are now prepared. Further live specimens are desired to be collected, but COVID-19 might delay fish import. For 3D movie experiments in near future, 3D models are successfully made for the three Tanganiylan model speceis (P. microlepis, P. straeleni, Cyphotilapia frontosa). Recording of their behaviors is now performed, and facing some challenges. Twenty-year-long census data from a rocky littoral zone in Laka Tanganyika was digitalized to used for GIS and CCM analyses, which are expected to reveal interspecific niche variation and interaction, respectively.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
Scanning using micro CT takes long time, because machine time is limited. Nevertheless, we scanned a lot of specimens enough for the analysis of the first model fish. We have a plan to use another micro CT machine at Ryukoku University for further analysis. COVID-19 has affected both collection and analysis of our live and fixed specimens. Our experiences of collaboration with researchers in Malawi and Zambia will become more essential than before.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Fish sampling will be continued in the both lakes, according to the prevailing laws (including those associated with COVID-19). Micro CT scanning will be done, possibly using two machines at OIST and Ryukoku, followed by the 3D image analysis to find out intra and inter-species morphological variations. One or two paper(s) of laterality study will be submitted hopefully in 2020. CCM, GIS, and 3D model studies will be hopefully finalized by the end of 2020.
