常微分方程式(連続型)及び差分方程式(離散型)の解の漸近的挙動を定性的に考究するとともに,それらを関数微分方程式(即ち,時間遅れを考慮する微分方程式)や楕円型方程式の研究に応用した。一例を挙げるならば,変数係数をもつ線形方程式や準線形微分方程式を対象に,解の振動性や零解の大域的漸近安定性について,数多くの先行研究を大きく改良できた。その秘訣は,これらの方程式と同値な方程式系に対して相平面解析を駆使したことにある。また,この相平面解析法は3次元方程式系に対しても有効であることを示した。
