In order to develop the idea of cultural sensitivity in measuring societal growth, we studied the societal development and societal well-being processes in a cross-cultural scheme. We carried out a series of theoretical studies, and two large cross-cultural empirical studies; our data collection covered fifty countries. On mapping of the aims of societal development, we collected data from almost 3,000 participants from nine countries. Our findings from this study demonstrate that while lay people understand modernization in relatively similar ways across cultures, their perceptions of specific pathways of modernization are largely different. In the secondary line of our empirical study, we finalized data collection from almost 13,000 participants from fifty countries.
