The water stable isotopes have already been implemented in different components of the coupled model MIROC-ESM in the past: in the atmospheric part by Okazaki and Yoshimura (J. Geophys. Res. Atmos., doi:10.1029/2018JD029463, 2019), in the land-surface model MATSIRO by Yoshimura et al. (Glob. Planet. Change, doi:10.1016/j.gloplacha.2005.12.007, 2006) and in the oceanic component by Liu et al. (J. Geophys. Res. Atmos., doi:10.1002/2014JD021583, 2014). For this fiscal year, the plan was first to get used to the different isotope-enabled models available in the Yoshimura Lab (IIS), especially MIROC5-iso for the atmosphere/land and COCO-iso for the ocean. This step did not present any particular difficulties. Important discussions with the different team members and other researchers from the AORI and JAMSTEC lead us to the conclusion that water stable isotopes should be implemented in the version 6 of the coupled model MIROC-ESM, and not in the version 5 as initially planned. Technical reasons and the apparent similarity between the atmosphere modules of MIROC5 and MIROC6 explain this choice. It does not involve any significant change in the initial time schedule.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
After having get used to the available isotope-enabled models in the laboratory, we have agreed inside our team on the following technical and scientific plan for this fiscal year: - implementation of water stable isotopes in all compartments of MIROC6-ESM: the technical work will be divided between the team members. The main works for this year will be to update the isotope code in atmospheric component from version 5 to 6 and to implement the water isotopes in the last version of the oceanic model COCO (version 4.9) in the same way as other tracers. - home-made isotopic inter-comparisons project: we will produce different simulations with the available isotope-enhanced atmospheric models, namely MIROC5-iso, IsoGSM, NICAMiso and ECHAM6-wiso. For the moment, the plan is to perform pre-industrial, paleoclimate (mid-Holocene, Last Glacial Maximum, …), AMIP free style and nudged (1979-2019) simulations. Strict setups are required for this exercise. An inter-comparison analysis is then planned.
