A collaborative research studied the seismic performance evaluation of suspended ceiling systems. The review on the Japanese, Chinese and the north American ceiling style showed a large difference in panel attachent and the stiffness of suspension members. A full-scale testing and numerical simulations of a Japanese style system presented the high seismic resistance of the system, where falling hazard is limited for a room-size ceiling. A damage pattern, threshold and margin to failure were exmined carefully with emphasis on functionality loss and repair cost. The interactions between the main ceiling grid and suspended electric equipment, and the surrounding wall increased damage. This finding leads to the development of an analytical model and the design procedure with enhanced resiliency. These finding are published in a three SCI papers in the prestigious international journal and one article in an international conference. The results and proposed model are well-received in the relevant community and the papers are getting a good number of citations.
