研究実績の概要 |
We successfully carried out the first two targets of the project including the literature review, and identification and initial contact with tourism suppliers. The literature review resulted in a scientific paper focused on the promotion and use of tourist-oriented built-for-disaster-purpose mobile applications. The paper is currently under review in the international Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management. We carried out meetings with collaborators from Wakayama University (Faculty of Tourism), who have facilitated direct contact with tourism suppliers. Other meetings have been held via video conference. The COVID-19 outbreak partially influenced this activity and will affect the activities included in the second period of the project (April 2020-March 2021). In particular, we canceled trips to Tokyo and other locations, and the money has been used to buy a laptop, software licenses (IBM SPSS AMOS 26, NVivo, Grammarly), and for English editing service to revise the submitted paper. The data collection included in the second period of the project (at Osaka Airport and Hotels) will be carried out at the end of the year (December 2020) and only in Kansai, as the Olympic Games have been postponed.

理由
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, we had to cancel some trips to Tokyo and other areas to meet with tourism suppliers that were planned for February and March 2020. Furthermore, due to the postponement of the Olympic Games, some adjustments to the planned schedule for 2020 fiscal year needs to be considered.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The data collection included in the second period of the project (at Osaka Airport and Hotels) will be carried out at the end of the year (December 2020) and only in Kansai, as the Olympic Games have been postponed. Also, due to the new scenario caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, we plan to enrich the project by conducting additional analysis under the title: "Being tourist during a pandemic: Tourists' risk information needs, seeking and processing behavior." We focus on online communities of travelers (snowball sampling methodology) that were in Japan during the outbreak and ask them what they think about risk communication during the emergency, what was missing, and what was expected. This study perfectly fits in with the initial project and enriches it by providing additional suggestion to improve tourism disaster risk communication in Japan.
