研究実績の概要 |
During the period of Nov. 2019 to Mar. 2020, the fellow started the research with reviewing literatures to understand the existing progress of science in his field of study, and identified applicable methods for the selected objectives. He selected sample districts in the study site, and made localization of indicators for assessment of selected ecosystem services (ES). He developed six different types of structured questionnaire for collecting data, and translated them to local language. The fellow presented his research proposal at UNU-IAS and IGES, and received constructive feedbacks. After pre-field survey preparation, he traveled to Ethiopia at the beginning of February and undertook the field survey for one and a half months. During the field survey, he conducted 130 household interviews which contains 170 questions. He also accomplished 52 interviews with key informants who have adequate knowledge about Jefoure traditional road, communal land, sacred forest and cultural ES. In addition, he administered 60 questionnaires about cultural ES of the landscape. The fellow held 13 focus group discussions with 6-8 people in a group which represent the community to understand the changes and challenges of ES, and evaluate resilience of the landscape. Furthermore, he has recorded species composition, measured circumferences of selected trees and perennial crops, and collected soil samples in order to understand the ES provision of various land uses. He also collected diverse spatial and non-spatial secondary data from various offices in Ethiopia.

理由
The fellow started the fellowship in November 1, 2019, and the FY 2019 was at the beginning phase of his research. The major research plans in this FY1 were office settlement, reviewing literatures, developing data collection tools and conducting field survey. These activities were conducted according to their planned schedule. He also started compilation and further analysis of the collected data in the last month of this FY. Thus, he completed the planned activities based on the plan.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In FY2020, the fellow will analyze the collected primary data and secondary data generated from orthophoto, socio-economic, infrastructure, water sources, and interviews. In addition, he will examine spatial data after purchasing high resolution satellite image of the study area. The fellow will start writing manuscripts for academic journals regarding Jefoure characteristics, trends, challenges, and its multiple values in the community, and sacred forest ecosystem services including their conservation status. Then, the fellow will work on the detailed characteristics of the Jefoure land-use system including the agroforestry system, and the quantification and mapping of the cultural ecosystem services. In this FY, he will also develop a methodology for prediction of population, and write a manuscript regarding multiple values of Enset crop in the landscape. The investigated results will be going through publication and presented in conferences. He plans to present his research output on Archaeological Cultural Landscapes Conference, Tokyo (Dec 03-04, 2020) and ESP Africa Conference, Rwanda (March 1-5, 2021). The generated data in this FY will be utilized in the next phase of the project activities such as resilience assessment, regulatory ecosystem services quantification, and scenario developments in the FY2021. There is no change in the research plans.
