研究実績の概要 |
Research focused on malaria with a focus on medical care and hygiene in Indonesia during the Japan occupation and sought to (1) understand medical practices in Indonesia and (2) the actual situation when policies and guidelines were formulated related to malaria prevention and hygiene. The purpose was to understand the changes in society and daily life after implementation of health policies. Research related to production and distribution policies for quinine and synthetic drugs, alternative medicines for malaria in Indonesia, and preventative efforts targeting mosquitos showed the impacts on daily life in Indonesia, but also illustrated the connections to metropolitan Japanese policy making. Research on language policy, activities of medical soldiers in eastern Indonesia, the Jakarta Medical College faculty, propaganda related to malaria, as well as activities of Indonesian researchers illustrated more connections to local society, and suggested the need to extend research beyond medicines. Due to changing circumstances, some research results were issued through university publications to increase speed of dissemination, while other results are under review at international medical history journals. Panels and international presentations were prepared for EuroSEAS 2021 in the Czech Republic, EuroSEAS 2022 in Paris, a 2021 medical history conference in Singapore, and a special public online symposium "First International Symposium--Malaria Wars: The War against Malaria in Japanese Occupied Indonesia" in September 2021 to internationally showcase and advance this research.
