研究実績の概要 |
Research for FY2019 centered on excavations at Suwahara site, Hokuto City, Yamanashi. The excavations took place between 11-24 September, 2019 with support from Hokuto Archaeology Center and Kayagatake History and Culture Institute. The goal was to identify pit dwelling features that could be meticulously excavated next year. Outside of excavation, additional ethnographic was conducted at the Hokuto Archaeology Center to learn the post-excavation processes involved in creating reports from excavated materials. In particular, we were able to observe and learn the ways of washing pottery so as not to damage it, the ways that potsherds are sorted (especially for repairing), and the techniques and technologies used for drawing profiles and detailed drawings of remains. All told, excavation was successful and several potsherds and other remains were recovered and the process of cleaning and sorting has begun. Further research examined previous examples of reconstructed dwellings was conducted. Part of this involved expanding the PI's database of reconstructed dwellings (r.bloxi.jp) to incorporate new examples and revise the conditions of existing entries. It also involved fieldwork visits to several sites in Nagano and Yamanashi.

1: 当初の計画以上に進展している
理由
The primary hurdle for this project was to receive permission and find an ideal location to excavate. With assistance from staff at Hokuto Archaeology Center, the negotiations with Yamanashi Board of Education to receive permission went smoothly. Consulting with the landowner for permission to excavate at Suwahara was also successful. Excavating the site, the recovery of remains, and the learning process for various activities took place at a speed faster than expected.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The intent for FY2020 is to continue excavations at Suwahara site, Hokuto City, Yamanashi. We will continue to collaborate with Hokuto Archaeology Center and Kayagatake History and Culture Institute in the planning and execution of the fieldwork. We intend to continue the sorting and cateloging of remains. Additional research will be conducted to examine previous trends in reconstructions, focusing on three sites: Togariisihi-Yosukeone site (Chino City, Nagano), Idojiri site (Fujimi Town, Nagano), and Umenoki site (Hokuto City, Yamanashi). The aim is to learn how other sites have approached reconstructions, as a means to help develop our own that will be used when designing and building our pit dwelling in subsequent years.
