During FY2019 the Campbell laboratory made steady progress towards achieving all of the goals of the grant. Specifically, in this fiscal year we have been able to accomplish the initial setup of the research lab, acquire major equipment necessary for the proposed research, recruit a number of talented student and internship researchers, recruit Project Associate Professor Takuya Terai (although his starting date was delayed to April 2020, due to administrative reasons), and make substantial progress towards the development of a range of new optogenetic and chemi-optogenetic indicators, in particular a series of lactate sensors.

理由
Overall, research is proceeding as expected. The initial phase of the proposed project was the lab setup, and this was completed during FY2019 as planned. During FY2019 we were fortunate to have been able to recruit a number of student researchers including Doctoral course student Zhu, Master course students Hashizume, Wojnicki, and Chai, B4 students Kadoya and Le, and internship students Kramer, Nguyen, Li, Suerte, and Dong. Each of these researchers was assigned a project that was aligned with the goals of the KIBAN(S) grant, resulting in substantial progress being made. Importantly, by having such a large number of researchers involved in the project at an early stage, we have been able to develop the feasibility of various project directions.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
During FY2019 we had a large number of researchers making progress on various aspects of the proposed project. Based on this progress there are a few particular focus areas that have emerged as the most promising research directions. Accordingly, for FY2020, we propose to focus on these most promising high-priority areas and revisit other areas in FY2021. These most promising high priority areas are: (1) Further development of high performance lactate biosensors; (2) Development of Halotag-based chemical-optogenetic indicators; (3) Development of improved NIR Ca2+ biosensors; and (4) Optimization of transposon technology for accelerating biosensor development. During FY2020 we will dedicate resources and effort to advancing these four project areas, likely leading to publications in FY2021.
