We proposed methods to support foreign language learners with the selection and translation of vocabulary to reduce false friends mistakes. Vocabulary selection: We proposed a recommendation approach that suggests vocabulary to learners based on their past learning activity. We evaluated the methods with refugees in different migration stages, with different vocabulary needs. The learning achievement and motivation increased significantly when learning the recommended vocabulary, compared to their textbook vocabulary. Vocabulary translation: We proposed methods that identify the intended meaning of the learner when they translate a polysemous word. We use their past learning data as a context to disambiguate their target word and provide them with the translation they need.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We will investigate collaborative knowledge sharing to avoid false friends mistakes using informal language learning environments. To do so, I aim at answering the following questions: How can we implement a knowledge transfer in terms of content and mistakes avoidance between different language learners in different stages of their language learning journey? What are the characteristics that should be taken into account to transfer knowledge between learners: demographics, location, etc. To do so, we will look into the past language learning history of language learners in informal language learning environments and propose clustering methods to group different learners with similar vocabulary needs.
