Organized an international research group on theories of life and matter, 1650-1850. 23 project members wrote papers on their specialized areas in philosophy, intellectual history, theology, and literature. The areas cover theories from the Cambridge Platonists, J. G. Herder, Kant, Schelling, Coleridge, and Hegel as well as from related thinkers.
Although the Tokyo conference was postponed due to coronavirus, the PI published a book on Coleridge's philosophy, a book chapter on living rhythm versus lifeless meter, a journal article on Coleridge's philosophy, and an journal article on interpreting and preserving the living core in religious experience. The PI also produced and is regularly updating a website for the project: https://livingideasproject.wordpress.com/
The PI also produced a conference paper on the history of the study of the heart in vertebrates, especially from William Harvey onwards. That paper also investigates how Coleridge developed theories of the developing heart into a metaphysical and logical concept that describes how inert matter and systems make a qualitative leap to becoming autonomous organisms or organizations and in that way become more 'alive', literally or figuratively.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The international conference has been postponed till September 2020, although it might become further postponed to February or March 2021 or even replaced by online video recordings of lectures with video conferencing and bulletin boards for discussion. Cancelling and rescheduling took up much work in February and March 2020. With the additional time, the PI and project members planned to do further research on their project areas and improve their conference presentations accordingly. Draft conference presentations will be peer-reviewed within and outside the research group and will be rewritten as book chapters for publication by an academic press.
