研究実績の概要 |
Research continued in 2020 despite restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The principal investigator completed three journal articles that will appear in international peer-reviewed journals. Two of the articles have completed all reviews and revisions and are scheduled for publication in 2021. The first is a paper on the relationship between the poetry of William Wordsworth and the Wedgwood pottery industry in 1798-1800. The second is an analysis of the use of form and materials in the early-modern epic poem The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser, in the early Spenserian poetry of William Wordsworth. The third article, on the relationship between the late poetry of William Wordsworth and discoveries in mathematics and physics by the Irish mathematician and astronomer William Rowan Hamilton (1805 - 1865), was completed and will be submitted for peer-review in 2021. The principal investigator also published 10 short works (not peer-reviewed) in two different international poetry publications. The principle investigator presented at 2 international conferences (online presentations): the Japan Writers Conference 2020 and Geneva Peace Week 2020. The latter presentation included the creation of an original documentary film (25min.). Finally, the principle investigator presented an exhibition of original work at International Christian University, Tokyo.

理由
The research is currently behind schedule due to international travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The principal researcher has no access to international research libraries in the UK, where most of the primary research materials are held. Nevertheless, the principal investigator will be starting a one=year research leave in September 2021. This full-time research period should allow the research project to be completed on time. As a worst-case scenario, a one-year extension may be necessary. Finally, while research time was limited during 2020, the principal investigator had opportunities to revise and write up previously completed research materials for publication. This should result in a larger number of peer-review publications in 2021.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In September 2021, the principal investigator will begin a one-year visiting fellowship at Cambridge University, UK. This full-time research period will present new opportunities for promoting the research project, completing new research for peer-reviewed publications, and growing an international network of research colleagues. The principal investigator will attend at least 2 international conferences in the UK and give papers, including 1 plenary lecture. If travel restrictions permit, the principal investigator will be able to carry out planned research at libraries and museums in France, Germany, and Italy. Otherwise, the research will focus on materials available only in UK libraries and museums. This may require a change in the historical authors and subjects investigated.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
A large part of the project grant was intended to be used for international travel in order to visit research libraries and museums, and attend international academic conferences. International travel was not possible in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. International research travel described in the project proposal can be completed during the remaining project time.
