In the last year of my three-year project “Villa Aurora as Sanctuary: A History of German Literature in Los Angeles, 1995-2020”, I focused on a manuscript on the literary and essayistic self-representation of the Villa Aurora as a hub of German-American cultural relations in regard to concepts of political and artistic refuge. The manuscript adopts the concept of “Sanctuary Cities” from the American debate on immigration and relates it to the literary texts about the Villa Aurora, a German artist’s residence since 1995, and was published as a contribution titled “Focus: Los Angeles as Sanctuary. 25 Years of Villa Aurora Literature” in “all the lonely people” (January 2022, ISBN: 9783959056076). The manuscript was also based on the lecture “25 Years of Literature from the Villa Aurora, a Sanctuary of Exile and a Gateway to California” I held on 6. November 2021 at the ceremony “The Sanctuary. Art and Literature from Exile and Hermitage” to celebrate the Villa Aurora’s 25th anniversary in Los Angeles, USA. There was an opportunity to present this manuscript at the conference “Writing in Residence: Globale Literaturproduktion in deutschen Residenzprogrammen”, 4-5. March 2022 in the LCT (Literarisches Colloquium Berlin), Germany.
