研究実績の概要 |
Because of the ongoing pandemic, experiments on number agreement in English as a second language have been postponed. Trips to collect data abroad had to be cancelled. Data collection in Japan has also been halted. Until more data can be collected from native Chinese speakers in Taiwan, the project will shift to work on native Thai speakers in collaboration with Teeranoot Siriwittayakorn, a lecturer at Chiang Mai University. The goal is to create instruments to measure basic individual variations in reading and working memory in native Thai speakers. These will be used to gauge native Thai speakers' reading patterns in their native languages and take them into consideration when measuring their reading trends in English as a second language. Some analyses have been conducted using past data. Preliminary results suggest that diacritics (e.g., those representing tone markers) that are added to a character need to be taken into consideration to better predict reading-time latencies in the Thai language. Moreover, new experiments have received approval from the Institutional Review Board at Chiang Mai University, and we have started collecting preliminary data online. Based on these results, the items for the main experiments will be adjusted and data collection should start soon after.
