研究実績の概要 |
Since April 2019, the researchers finished one research project that had been already started. In addition, we started and finished a new study exactly as planned.
Together, this has led to 3 articles in refereed journals. The latest acceptance (pending minor revisions) was in TESOL Quarterly, which is the most well known TESOL journal. To be accepted by the strict reviewers for a full length article in this journal shows the quality of our research project. The research was also recently published in two of the most well-know second language reading journals: The Reading Matrix and Reading in a Foreign Language.
The results were also presented at two international conferences, including the largest eye tracking conference in the world.

理由
It is very rare in our field for a new empirical research using newly purchased equipment to be already accepted (pending minor revisions) in one year in an extremely competitive journal. Usually, the projects with new equipment and software have major delays and challenges, but these was avoided. The study methods were planned precisely, and participants were recruited and participated without issues. In addition, the results were written up in a timely manner. Finally, the article was accepted with just minor revisions, and likely without being sent out a second time. This is very unusual for competitive academic journals. The other two articles were published without extensive revisions.
Presentations went well, with the chance to interact with the preeminent scholars in the area.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The second study has been planned by the co-researcher. However, the coronavirus situation has affected students' ability to be present on campus. This will make it difficult to acquire new data as planned in the spring term of 2020. In addition, major conferences in which we were accepted to present were cancelled due to the health crisis worldwide. Therefore, we have switched gears to focus on planning upcoming research, and we hope to gather data in the fall.
We also plan to finish writing up a second article based on our 2019 research. The data on vocabulary retention was not yet published, so we have high hopes for an additional publication.
