研究実績の概要 |
I have completed writing up my research data gathered in fieldwork in New England in 2019 and the US West Coast in 2022. I have produced maps of jess and dow in America, which show new data previously unpublished. I am finalizing and submitting my findings for publication. One review article is in press for a European journal and will appear this summer.

理由
The second phase of my research was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. I was unable to travel to research institutes overseas or conduct new fieldwork on forms of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ in other languages. I plan to continue these in summer 2023.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In 2023-24, I plan to move on to examine yes and no more universally in human language. This encompasses the origins of yes and no in language, vocalization and gesture.
I have set up a website to gather data from respondents around the world on ‘yes’ and ‘no’ in their language, as well as how they communicate ‘yes’ and ‘no’ by vocalization and gesture in their part of the world. I will try to publicize this website to generate responses. I plan to appear on BBC radio to talk about my research findings, if possible.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
I plan to conduct research internationally on the development of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ in human language. In 2023-24, I therefore plan to undertake a number of research visits overseas for fieldwork on languages and cultures that offer interesting data on ‘yes’ and ‘no’. I also plan to visit research institutes internationally that are conducting research on universals or ‘yes’ and ‘no’.
