研究実績の概要 |
In the first fiscal year of 2019 (FY2019), both PI & Co-I conducted a large-scale online survey to assess Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ familiarity and emotional valence of the word items contained in the New Academic Word List (NAWL). Utilizing a whole year and including more than 200 students' data, the enriched NAWL (E-NAWL) was successfully made. The progress and preliminary results (about proto-E-NAWL, containing 231 extracted items) were presented at two international conferences (in Tokyo and in Manchester) in summer. Moreover, in July 2019, the PI led an pseudo-experiment using the emotional valence of easy-to-understand contextualized sentences to investigate how different emotional contexts affect vocabulary retention differently. The results of this study provided guidance on the investigators in writing emotionally contextualized sentences to be supplemented to the NAWL. In addition, at the end of the fiscal year (winter 2019-2020), both PI & Co-I constructed the NAWL-based online vocabulary learning spaced repetition software (E-NAWL SRS) for Japanese university students under the Co-I’s SRS platform. Namely, original sentences for all the NAWL items were created and translated while the micro-emotional factors were considered. The audio files were recorded by Co-I as well to finish making the first version of the E-NAWL learning material.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
The fundamental data of the project - emotional valence and familiarity scores of each NAWL lexical items rated by a large number of Japanese university students - were smoothly collected and analyzed, successfully making the E-NAWL (Enriched, Emotional, Educational, Electronic New Academic Word List). Besides, the internal consistency showed no problem regarding its reliability. Furthermore, the NAWL-based online vocabulary learning pedagogical material (E-NAWL SRS) was successfully developed, paving the way for the second fiscal year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the second fiscal year of 2020 (FY2020), both PI & Co-I have started to utilize the completed online vocabulary learning spaced repetition software (E-NAWL SRS) as a tool for academic word study in tertiary education, and to gather recall success rate data for encountered word items across various word knowledge focused tasks, and multiple review scheduled intervals. Furthermore, the online software is recording students’ log in times to access overall engagement with the help of additional questions to detect the motivational states of each learner. In addition, familiarity and emotional data accumulated in the first year will be analyzed for correlation with recall success rate data. Finally, results will be analyzed for academic presentations - which may be cancelled or postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The progress so far will be submitted to at least one journal for publication.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Reasons: For statistical analysis and data collection, the investigator made use of the resources available at the university and free services instead of purchasing software for the first year. Due to practicality and a larger data collection, surveys and pseudo-experiments were conducted instead of a rigorous experiment with personnel expenditure. Also, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, events that the investigators had planned to attend were cancelled. Usage plan: Articles needed in the study will be purchased. Web hosting fee and travel expenses will be used more in the upcoming years as well.
