研究実績の概要 |
In the second fiscal year of 2020 (FY2020), both PI and Co-I implemented the learning system E-NAWL (Enriched, Emotional, Educational, Electronic New Academic Word List) in a university-level English as a foreign language learning setting, successfully initiating the third pillar of this project - pedagogical practices. Co-I managed the digital platform and the server, solving technical troubles and improving the software user experiences. Co-I also developed new gamification elements in the learning system as well as acquiring higher technical skills managing the digital server. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic that caused a significant difficulty in experimental studies, PI started to collect emotional valence data of frequent formulaic sequences rated by Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners, extending the project’s scope. The progress was presented at a conference in Japan (JAAL in JACET, December 2020). In addition, the pseudo-experiment conducted in 2019 was presented at a virtual conference in the US (AAAL2021, March 2021). Furthermore, the fundamental theories and the previous study that the current project is based on was published as a paper (Language Learning & Education) and as a chapter of a PI’s edited book (Formulaic Sequences in Foreign Language Learning and Education: An Introduction [in Japanese]).

理由
As for the E-NAWL (Enriched, Emotional, Educational, Electronic New Academic Word List), the NAWL-based online vocabulary learning pedagogical material (E-NAWL SRS) was successfully developed in FY2019, which was used for data collection in FY2020. It was, however, revealed that items located in the latter parts of the list tended to be processed less frequently than the ones in the former parts, causing skewness of data. For the sake of balanced multifaceted analysis, decreasing the degree of skewness with additional data is called for. In addition, a number of conferences were cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, delaying presentations and publications. Moreover, the technical manager (Co-I) had to spend extra resources troubleshooting the digital system, causing a slight delay in the learning system.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As for the first pillar, experimental investigation, a publication is to be made in FY2021 about the presentation in FY2020, which is based on the study in FY2019. The lingering pandemic makes it difficult to conduct rigorous experiments in a laboratory setting. The silver lining, however, is that such rigorous experiments are not the pivotal part of this project, allowing them to be compensated by pseudo-empirical studies and other hypothetico-deductions with extended scopes - such as involving formulaic sequences as the stimuli. Namely, the lexical valence study is replicated to check the reliability of the lexical valance data. Plus, the valence of the contexts (example sentences) in E-NAWL will be generated numerically, allowing closer investigation about the interplay between contextual valence and the lexical valance. As for the second pillar, multifaceted analysis, data collection of E-NAWL is continued while reversing the order of the items in the list to decrease the skewness. After sufficient amount of data was collected, the exploratory analysis is to be conducted, presented, and published. As for the third pillar, the E-NAWL learning system will continue to be implemented in tertiary education while fixing any technical problems and improving the user experiences. The long-term prospect includes releasing e-learning/enriched NAWL in the public domain.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Reasons: The biggest reason is that the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled international as well as domestic events that PI and Co-I had planned to attend. In addition, as for statistical analysis and the online questionnaires, PI utilized the resources available at the university and free services instead of purchasing software.
Usage plan: Articles needed in the study will be purchased. Web hosting fee and travel expenses will be used more in the upcoming years as well.
