研究実績の概要 |
In the third fiscal year of 2021 (FY2021), PI and Co-I implemented the learning system E-NAWL (Enriched, Emotional, Educational, Electronic New Academic Word List) in a university-level English as a foreign language learning setting. Co-I managed the digital platform and the server, solving technical troubles and improving the software user experiences. Notably for this year, the order of lists were inversed on the system so that the latter items will be processed more. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic that caused a significant difficulty in experimental studies, PI continued to collect emotional data of frequent lexical as well as formulaic items rated by Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. The lexical valence study was replicated to check the reliability of the valence data. Plus, the valence of contexts in E-NAWL were rated numerically. One more additional achievement was that valence as well as arousal data were retrieved. The progress was presented at a virtual international conference in Czechia (ICP2020plus, July 2021). The learning system was also introduced and presented at a domestic conference (LET Kansai, December 2021). In addition, a peer-reviewed article relevant to this project was successfully published at SAGE Open, an international open-source journal. Moreover, manuscripts were submitted to academic journals, currently under review. Furthermore, theoretical as well as pedagogical investigation were elaborated by referring to multidisciplinary literatures and previous studies. The outcomes were presented at multiple conferences.

理由
As for the E-NAWL (Enriched, Emotional, Educational, Electronic New Academic Word List), the NAWL-based online vocabulary learning pedagogical material (E-NAWL SRS) was successfully developed in FY2019, which was used for data collection in FY2020 and FY2021. Since the number of data for each sub-list is still limited for some lists, continued data collection is called for. In addition, a number of conferences were cancelled or postponed due to the lingering COVID-19 pandemic, delaying presentations and publications. Although one additional academic journal was published in FY2021, there are still submitted manuscripts currently under review.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As for the first pillar, experimental investigation, a publication about the empirical study of contextual and lexical valence is to be made in FY2022, which is currently under review. Data collection with extended scopes will be continued, including the third dimension of emotionality in affective science - dominance. As for the valence of the contexts (example sentences) in E-NAWL, an additional data collection in terms of arousal will be implemented, which would enable analysis utilizing the circumplex model of emotion that involve valence as well as arousal. As for the second pillar, multifaceted analysis, data collection of E-NAWL is continued. After sufficient amount of data was collected, the exploratory analysis is to be conducted, presented, and published. As for the third pillar, the E-NAWL learning system will continue to be implemented in tertiary education while fixing any technical problems and improving the user experiences. The long-term prospect includes releasing e-learning/enriched NAWL in the public domain.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The biggest reason is that the COVID-19 pandemic continued to negatively affect international as well as domestic events that PI and Co-I had planned to attend, causing delay in presentations and publications.
Usage plan: Articles needed in the study will be purchased. Travel expenses and paper processing fee will also be the target of expenditure.
