研究実績の概要 |
In the extended fourth fiscal year of 2022 (FY2022), PI kept on implementing the learning system E-NAWL (Enriched, Emotional, Educational, Electronic New Academic Word List) in a university-level English as a foreign language learning setting. Co-I made improvements on the interleaved spaced repetition learning software and the server Eigomemo, solving technical troubles and improving the software user experiences. Notably, now Eigomemo has more gamification functions that facilitate student engagement - such as medal systems and log-in bonuses. The progress of E-NAWL was published as a co-authored journal article in March 2023: Kanazawa, Y., & Lafleur, L. (2023). ENAWL: Enriching the New Academic Word List with emotional valence , familiarity, and knowledgeability. Kokusaigaku Kenkyu - Journal of International Studies, 12(1), 141-151. PI further collected emotional data of academic English words, this time including new data concerning the third emotional dimension on top of valence and arousal, i.e., dominance. Throughout the school year, lexical dominance data were collected for all E-NAWL items and formulaic items. In addition, E-NAWL contextual arousal data were newly collected, too, supplementing the contextual valence data collected in FY2021. Moreover, submitted manuscripts, one about the lexical and contextual valence, the other about the interleaved spaced repetition learning software, are currently under review.

理由
Although the NAWL-based online vocabulary learning pedagogical material (E-NAWL SRS) was successfully developed in FY2019, which was used for data collection in FY2020, FY2021, and FY2022, not all data analyses are completed and reviewing processed of the submitted manuscripts are still in progress.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As for the first pillar, experimental investigation, a publication about the empirical study of contextual and lexical valence is expected to be achieved in FY2023, which is still under review. As for the second pillar, multifaceted analysis, further exploratory analysis is to be conducted, presented, and published. As for the third pillar, the E-NAWL learning system will continue to be implemented in tertiary education while fixing any technical problems and improving the user experiences. The long-term prospect includes releasing e-learning/enriched NAWL in the public domain.

備考 |
In a 2022 book and an online article about formulaic sequences, Kanazawa (ed) (2020), authored partly by PI and Co-I, was referred to as a recommendable research-oriented book.
