研究実績の概要 |
I will summarize the second year achievements in three categories. 1. Publishing: The Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigator (Co-I) had a new journal article accepted by an international journal, English Teaching Forum. The PI also published a chapter in a book by Routledge, an international publisher. Another book chapter by the PI and Co-I was accepted and will be published in the third year of the project. Finally, an article by the PI by another international journal is currently under review. 2. Conference Presentations: The PI and Co-I gave a number of online conference presentations at international conferences, including TESOL and AAAL. Despite the impact of COVID-19, we had our proposals accepted and made a number of online presentations in order to more widely disseminate the results of the project thus far. 3. New Research Planning: Progress was made in two areas. First, the PI and Co-I designed a new study that will be implemented in the coming academic year. Second, the PI and Co-I administered a survey regarding teacher views of using humor in online language teaching. This was a shift from the intended focus of the impact of humor on study abroad.

理由
Despite the impact of COVID-19 on study abroad, our project is progressing smoothly in other areas, such as research development and dissemination of results. First, as mentioned, we gave a number of presentations at international conferences, including the TESOL and AAAL conferences. We also gave an extended workshop on the role of humor in intercultural communication for SIETAR. Second, we continued to publish the results of the project. One article was accepted by an international journal and a book chapter was also published. Third, we have continued to develop a new study for our research that will be piloted in the spring of the third year. We had hoped to investigate the role of humor in study abroad, but we have had to somewhat shift this focus due to the current situation.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Our research plan for the third year is as follows. First, we will continue to present and disseminate results at international conferences. Second, we will implement our new study on humor competency training and submit a journal article by the end of the year. Third, we will continue to develop a survey regarding the role of humor in study abroad. We will administer the survey if students are able to study abroad in the coming year. If this is still not possible, we will consider alternatives, such as interviewing students who studied abroad prior to the impact of COVID-19. Fourth, we will submit another article measuring views of humor in online teaching, especially with regards to online synchronous English language lessons.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the impact of COVID-19, we were unable to attend international (or even domestic) conferences. Therefore, there were extra funds to be transferred over to the third year.
