研究実績の概要 |
I will summarize the year three achievements in three categories: 1. Publishing: The Principle Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigator (Co-I) published new articles in two international journals. Additionally, we were invited to submit a chapter to a volume devoted to the topic of humor in English education. 2. Conference Presentations: Although most academic conferences were still held online, the PI and Co-I gave a number of presentations at international conferences, including TESOL and the conference of the British Association of Applied Linguistics. 3. New Data Collection: Although students were still not able to study abroad, the PI and Co-I designed a new empirical study aimed to help Japanese learners of English comprehend and respond to the types of English humor used online, such as on social media platforms. We will continue to collect data with regards to this project.

理由
Despite the impact of COVID-19 on one of the main themes (humor in international communication) of our project, we have made significant progress by: 1) Modifying this theme to focus on helping Japanese learners of English to comprehend the type of humor used in online communication such as social media and developing a new empirical study, 2) Continuing to publish in international journals about the findings of our research, 3) Continuing to present our findings at a range of international (online) conferences.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We have extended this project with the aim of: 1) Continuing to collect data on our new empirical study designed to help Japanese learners of English comprehend the types of humor used in international communication, 2) Expanding this project to also help Japanese learners of English respond to and produce humor in international communication, 3) We have submitted a chapter summarizing our research findings to a volume about innovative language education in Asia, 4) We have already been accepted to one international conference in 2022AY and will submit proposals to several more.

As most international conferences were moved online again in 2021AY, we aim to present our research at international conferences in 2022AY.
