研究実績の概要 |
In 2020 I focused on the relationship between participation in online discourse on polarized issues and political ideology; the latter can be estimated through network analysis of the follower relationships between Twitter users following politicians. I started and nearly completed a database of national and local Japanese politicians' Twitter accounts, and collected their tweets and followers. I have also started comparing discourse on whaling to discourse on the "comfort women" issue in order to gain a better perspective on the relative salience and ideological positioning of the two issues. Preliminary results show "comfort women" to be a much more salient issue for politicians than whaling: of 5386 politician accounts from which I have collected 100 or more tweets, only 2 showed more than 1% of tweets about whaling, whereas for 112 accounts, at least 1% of their tweets were about "comfort women." I also collected data on how the two issues are discussed on Wikipedia and YouTube. I wrote a paper on the editing of the "Comfort Women" article on English Wikipedia. The paper used a combination of manual content coding and network analysis to reveal the structures of collaboration and conflict between editors. I presented it to an online conference in November 2020. I started to build a dataset of whaling-related YouTube videos.

理由
I have identified 7260 Twitter accounts belonging to local and national politicians, and expect to complete this task before the end of May 2021, with an expected total of about 8500 accounts. I have collected 15.15 million tweets sent from those accounts, dating back to 2010 (a small number of politicians send a lot of tweets). Concurrently I am working on data collection and analysis to identify the ideological structure of domestic political online communication, and how internationally polarized issues relate to this structure. I am also collecting tweets related to whaling and "comfort women"; 120,637 and 1.76 million respectively from 1 January to 6 May 2021. In addition, I have collected details of 37,817 whaling-related videos on YouTube going as far back as 2006, and am currently working on data cleaning. As far as Wikipedia is concerned, I have updated my dataset of editing activity on "comfort women" related pages to mid-April 2021, and am currently using the new data to revise my conference paper for submission to a journal.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I am planning two articles initially this year, one on how local and national politicians address these polarized topics, and one on the way the topics are discussed by Twitter users with an interest in Japanese politics. I am also sketching out a book that will bring the findings of the project together. Finally, I plan to continue updating my dataset of politicians' Twitter accounts. This dataset will allow me to investigate many topics not limited to this project. In particular, most previous research has focused on the use of Twitter by national politicians, and relatively little attention has been paid to how local politicians use social media.
