研究実績の概要

The principal research activity carried out in FY2019 was the completion of an edited volume: Religion and Nationalism in Asia, which was published by Routledge in September 2019. As lead editor, I was responsible for soliciting and editing chapters, checking proofs, compiling an index and writing an introduction and conclusion with my co-editor: Takashi Kibe. In addition, I contributed a chapter: "Midnights's Children: Religion and Nationalism in South Asia." A thorough literature review was made possible by this JSPS grant.
In addition, I carried out field research for the project and gave presentations in Greece, Thailand and Egypt. In Greece, I visited a refugee camp in the island of Lesbos to interview refugees in June 2019. In Thailand, I was invited to present at the "Peacebuilders Conference on Faith, Development, and Peace" at Chulangkorn University which was organized as part of the Holy Apolstolic visit of Pope Francis. My presentation examined local responses to Peacebuilding in South Asia based on previous fieldwork. Finally, in Egypt, I presented the theoretical framework of my research project, "Saving Liberal Peacebuilding: From the “Local Turn” to a Post-Western Peace" in the plenary session of a conference on Peace, Conflict and Development. The presentation was based on my chapter to the following book which I co-edited: Rethinking Peace: Discourse, Memory, Translation, and Dialogue, which was published by Rowman and Littlefields International in 2019. As co-editor, I was responsible for writing the introduction, as well as a section on "Discourse".

理由

*Progress on research was stalled by the COVID-19 virus which forced the cancellation of my presentations at the Annual Convention of the International Studies Association (ISA) in Hawaii, March 25-29, 2019. I was scheduled to present two papers, one on the role of religion in peacebuilding and development and the other an empirical case study of South Asia at the convention. In addition, I had helped organize a pre-convention workshop at the University of Hawa'ii in Manoa on March 24, 2019. It was anticipated that the workshop would give rise to an edited volume and/or journal special issue to which I would contribute. Furthermore, I had anticipated carrying out fieldwork on local perspectives on Peacebulding at the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in March but this research trip needed to be cancelled in the light of the COVID-19 virus.

今後の研究の推進方策

In FY2019, I developed and expanded upon a theoretical framework to apply to the study of the role played by faith-based actors in peacebulding and development. Empirical research for the project was scheduled to commence in 2020. However, as a result of the COVID-19 virus, empirical research will be postponed until travel restrictions are lifted. In the meantime, attempts will be made to identify, and work with, local, faith-based peacebuilders with an view to carrying of empirical research online. Already, contact has been made with potential research assistants and partners in Rwanda and Colombia, countries I had hoped to visit to carry out empirical research. The analysis of the data involved will necessitate the purchase of an additional PC to process the research findings which will mainly be qualitative informing the theoretical approach taken. Internet connectivity is an obvious limitation of the revised plan and may be particularly acute in South Asia where power outages are frequent. Furthermore, the International Political Science Annual Convention (IPSA) which was scheduled to be held in Lisbon, Portugal will be postponed from July 2020 to July 2021. I submitted a panel around based on the research project which was accepted and am scheduled to make two presentations. Therefore, I will focus on my presentations for IPSA in FY2020 and send both papers out for review in internationally refereed journals so I can work on anticipated revisions in time for the convention.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

The COVID-19 virus caused the cancellation of the International Studies Association (ISA) Annual Convention in March 2019 where I was scheduled to present the theoretical framework of the research project and an emprical case study of South Asia. Furthermore the International Political Science Association (IPSA) Annual Convention, scheduled for July 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal, has been postponed to July 2021. Until travel restrictions are lifted it will be impossible to carry out empirical research necessary for the research project so FY2020 will be spent expanding upon previously conducted research in South Asia and further developing the theoretical framework.
