| 研究実績の概要 |
During the first year of this two-year project, I completed the following:
-Collected qual data for a pilot study with 5 Japanese students doing internships in ASEAN. Based on results, a comprehensive literature review was undertaken in preparation for the main mixed methods study. I then created and piloted a quan survey, based on Mazzerol and Soutar’s (2002) push-pull items.
-Collected quan data from 535 eligible students across Japan.
-Analyzed quan data, developed qual phase, collected qual data from 7 Japanese students in ASEAN.
-Wrote and submitted an article to an international, refereed journal based on the literature review and pilot study.
-Presented my findings at 6 conferences, including 3 in ASEAN.

理由
My initial plan for the first year was to complete my pilot, literature review, and quan data collection. I met these goals; however, while recruiting students to join my qual phase starting in FY2020, I was presented the opportunity to qual collect data from 7 Japanese students studying in ASEAN from January to May 2020. It was unexpected, but I decided to fast-track my qual data collection to include the experiences of these 7 students. The qual data from these 7 participants will be critical since students will no longer be studying abroad in FY2020 due to COVID-19. Fortunately, I feel that I have enough data to complete the project.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
Since this is the final year of my two-year project, I need to conclude my data collection, merge the quan and qual data, complete the analysis, and disseminate my findings through publication and academic events. I have taken some preliminary steps in achieving this, including the completion of a workshop in MAXQDA to facilitate the coding and thematic analysis of my qual data. I have applied to share my findings via presentation at several international and domestic events. I also plan to write two academic papers for publication: one by myself which will focus on student discussion of COVID-19 while in ASEAN, and a second with my research collaborator that will examine the study abroad experience in ASEAN, with focus on English as a Lingua Franca and intercultural developments.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
I came very close to spending the full amount I was allocated for FY2019 - only 23,322yen remained. The reason for this is that I did not spend as much on reference material as I anticipated because of free online material and using the library. I also decided that I did not need to buy a video camera due to the video functions on my MacBook Pro. In FY2020 I will use funds for translation, participant remuneration, qual data software and hardware, conference fees, business trips, and other peripherals needed to complete my project.
