研究実績の概要 |
This study aims to elucidate the effects of form modality (visual, aural, or both) during the presentation of target vocabulary words using digital flashcards on the explicit and implicit knowledge gains of those same words.
During this 2019-2020 research period I was able to achieve 1)peer-reviewed publications in two international journals (System & Reading in a Foreign Language), one domestic journal (VERB), and one conference proceeding (EuroCALL), 2)an invited book review publication (JALT Journal), 3)four international research presentations (JALT, EuroCALL, Vocab@Leuven x 2), and 4)the construction of a personal website and blog to share the results of any research conducted (brandonkramer.net).

理由
My stated plans for the 2019-2020 research period were 1) to acquire the necessary equipment, 2) develop the primary research instruments, and 3) pilot these instruments with a limited number of students.
While I have been able to complete the first two goals without problems, the COVID-19 outbreak has prevented me from safely meeting with my fellow researchers and paid student volunteers in order to complete the third goal of pilot testing the research instruments.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
My proposed plans for the 2020-2021 research period were primarily data collection, with paid student volunteers participating in deliberate vocabulary learning treatment sessions followed by a post-treatment measurement of their implicit knowledge gains. Qualitative follow-up data collection would follow these quantitative measures.
Given the current situation, my current plans are to conduct limited pilot testing during the summer period, and begin collecting data from participants in earnest from the start of the fall semester. If there are no further interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, data collection should be complete by the end of 2020. If, however, I am not able to collect data in person, some flexibility will be required and online options will need to be considered.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was forced to delay my initial pilot testing and a planned conference in America was cancelled (AAAL 2020 in Denver, CO, USA).
I plan to put this money back into the project by funding further data collection.
