Several papers related to the project have been in various stages of drafting during AY2021. The first explores the impact of population demographics on social policy choices in East Asia, especially the decision to pursue social investment policies. The second focuses on the impact of partisanship on social policy in the East Asian region. A separate working paper regarding the attitudes among voters in East Asian countries towards welfare policy has also been planned, but more data collection is still needed.
Overall, the research project provides evidence for how voter attitudes combine with partisanship in the electoral system in determining social policy outcomes. Going forward, the data collected as part of this project will be used to explore other aspects of the social policy process in East Asia.
