研究実績の概要 |
During the first project year, the investigator focused on literature review, academic discussions and presentation of conceptual and theoretical approaches to national and international scholars and data collection in Sao Paulo. Major achievements were the two field trips to Brazil in summer (August 2019) and winter (Dec/Jan. 2020), where the investigator connected with scholars at the host institution, the Center for Metropolitan Studies at the University of Sao Paulo (USP). Ethnographic observations and 15 qualitative face to face interviews laid the foundation for the case study in Sao Paulo.
In fall 2019, the investigator presented a conceptual paper that proposed an analytical framework for her project at the International Conference ‘Migration and the Generational Experience’, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology/Charles University Prague, 24-25 September 2019. In October 2019, the PI was invited by Prof. Fabian Froese, Chair of human resource management and Asian business at the University of Goettingen, Germany, to present her research in his research group on international human resources in Asia. In December 2019, the PI presented her work in the international symposium ‘New and old migrations and diversities in UK and Japan, 2-6 December at Waseda University.

理由
As outlined above, the main objectives of the first year (literature review, familiarization with the field in Sao Paulo, first interviews, connecting with scholars, presentation of conceptual ideas, transcription of the first interviews) were achieved as planned. According to the plan for the second year, the PI was scheduled to travel to Brazil and participate at the International Congress of Sociology in Porto Allegre where she would have had the opportunity to present her newly obtained data from Sao Paulo for the first time in front of an audience knowledgeable of the region. After the conference, the PI had scheduled extended field work in Sao Paulo in order to acquire the rest of the data from Brazil. Due to COVID 19, the conference was postponed to February 2021 and the PI has already registered her attendance, hoping that the situation will be in control until then.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Given the severe spread of the corona virus in Brazil, next to the International Congress of Sociology being postponed, the field trip to Sao Paulo in summer 2020 also had to be cancelled. Instead, the PI is monitoring the situation and might move her follow-up fieldwork in Singapore and Tokyo, which were originally scheduled for the later project years, to the second year in case the situation of the corona virus in both countries is recovering in time. Meanwhile, the investigator uses the time for a more thorough reading of applicable theories for her data analysis and for transcribing and progressing with the analysis of the first interview round in Brazil.
If the situation in Japan further improves, the PI will present her work at the Association of Asian Studies in Asia conference, scheduled to take place in Kyoto in August/September 2020. Furthermore, the PI has worked together with Prof. Yen-Fen Tseng, Professor of Sociology at National Taiwan University, on an academic paper on foreign ‘global talents’' retention in Japanese firms. The manuscript has been submitted to a peer-reviewed academic journal and is now awaitng final results.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The PI had planned to buy a new laptop PC but the old one was still fine during the first project year so it will be bought once the performance of the old laptop decreases. Also, it took longer than expected to hire an RA for the project (hired from Nov. 2019 onwards) so there were fewer costs for staff than originally planned. Given the quite high amount of data gathered in the first year, the PI will need more help from RAs from now on and so will need to use the stated amount.
